Roof in the Trossachs

Roof in The Trossachs

We, 'Angus A Young Roofing Specialists' and our team started this project mid June 2011 and completed it in November 2011.

The main issue was that the Caithness Stone covering of the first 1.5mtrs was sitting on a pitch of 14 degrees rising to 36 degrees. This was situated on the lower section of the main block of the house.
The Best Answer:-
  • Take the dual pitch out.

  • We now had a single pitch of in excess of 28 degrees, which would now meet the recommended pitch for random diminishing slate.

  • Due to the exposure of the roof all slates were double nailed with copper clout nails.

  • All guttering were replaced, as were all lead works to chimneys and valleys.

  • No bossing of lead was carried out only welding to all cuts and corners to maximize the longevity of the lead as advised by the Lead Sheet Association.
  • The Road Side of the Roof
  • Over the years the property had been gentrified. The main block being  in excess of 400 yrs.' old, extensions and turrets were added later making the whole roof extremely complex although full of character.
  • We at 'Angus A Young Roofing Specialists' believe in 'KIS' keeping It Simple.
  • Firstly we raised the internal flat roof making the noisy rainwater downpipe obsolete. Rainwater now comes down onto the slate and down a new lead valley.
  • The existing gulley was barely 4 inches (100ml) and unserviceable. We widened the gulley, extended the main roof rafters, added two valleys and the water now flows easily down the lower roof into the wide guttering below.

Testimonial

In early 2011, I sought a number of quotations for an extensive re-roofing project for our home near Callander.  The property was partially roofed in Caithness stone and so the change to Burlington slate would take some planning and strategy, involving the approval of the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park.

I knew of Angus Young by his excellent reputation in the area and, I have to say, I was really impressed with him from our first meeting.  He came across as a man of integrity - and that was proved time and time again during the project.  Angus' quote for the work, although competitive, was not the cheapest but I soon appreciated that there were reasons for the slightly increased costings, such as copper nails and double nailing of all slates.

Angus and his team started the project, and indeed each day, on time.  The project was extended from the estimate of four to just under six months, due to unexpected problems.  However, Angus tackled the unexpected with great grace and worked tirelessly to complete the project.  He kept us informed at all times of any changes to plans and gave us a daily report on progress.  I found Angus delightful to work with he and his staff became good friends of our family!

I would recommend Angus and his company unreservedly.  Two years on from the work being undertaken we still marvel at the standard of the work.  Put simply, we are delighted!  It is important that any potential client has total confidence in using a contractor for roofing work, which is frequently costly and can run into unanticipated problems.  Angus Young offers that confidence.
