Roof in tAYNUILT, OBAN

Roof in TAYNUILT, OBAN

The pitch on most flanks was as little as 20 degrees. The clients first request of natural slate had proven impossible due to the high exposure zone of the West Coast of Scotland.  After liaising with the client, it was decided to go with Cambrian slates.  These are well suited for high exposure zones due to their triple fixings.
Cambrian slates can go down to a 15 degree pitch and for peace of mind are warranted for 60 years by the manufacturer.

The roof had been stripped approximately 10 years ago, UPVC Capping and fascia boards were fitted over rotten timbers. No allowance had been made for the 20 degree pitch.  Some head laps (area where the slates overlap) were less than 50mm.  This had caused severe water ingression into the roof void and the roof was starting to collapse.  The valley rafter to the far right had snapped causing the ridge to drop by as much as 150mm.

It was decided to rebuild the complete roof keeping as close to the original specification as possible.  The valley rafters were specially cut, graded and treated, 65mm x 175mm.

We had sympathetically designed and built a stronger roof. Extended the valley boards through and over the wall heads to pick up the fascia and barge boards, fitted 5 inch cast iron guttering.

Testimonial

Our sincere thanks to Angus and his team for all their work re-roofing our house.  The project was a real challenge, a complex multilevel traditional cut & pitch construction with a shallow pitch and sited in a high exposure area.
Despite its relatively remote location, Angus was willing to
provide a quotation and the guys worked flexible hours and planned their work to make best use of the available weather windows.
The roof had suffered many years of neglect and poor repairs and on stripping it became evident that it would also need re-raftering.
Angus had good working relations with an architect and structural engineer who were able to advise on some of the more complex details.
His good communication and timekeeping together with a high level of attention to detail throughout made it an enjoyable and rewarding experience for us all.
