It was a great pleasure to be asked to do the replacement roof of the historic Lochearnhead Scout Station (formerly Lochearnhead train station).
The Station roof was originally covered in Redland 49’s and re-slated in Burlington Random Diminishing Slates. Traditionally it would have been locally sourced Scottish slates when it was first built. The roof structure was suffering from timber decay around the eaves, of which had to be extensively rebuilt to be able to take the extra weight of the glass canopy. The lead works to the chimneys were replaced as were all the guttering with powder coated aluminium. The downpipes had been leaking for years. With that in mind, we designed and had custom made new downpipes to give the correct falls and angles which were welded at all joints to eradicate future failure. It was a pleasure to work with the Scout Leaders and we wish them a very dry future in their Bonnie wee station. |
Testimonial
Hertfordshire Scouts have owned and operated Lochearnhead Scout Station since 1962 as an outdoor centre giving access to some of the most beautiful hills and lochs in Central Scotland. When we first acquired the Station, it was in a run down and derelict state. Working parties travelling up at the weekend restored it to a usable state and improvement works have continued ever since. However, after 50 years of exposure to the sometimes wild Scottish elements, the Management Committee decided to invest in a new roof covering and a refurbishment of the glass canopy. The decision was made to try and get as close as possible to the original building design and detailing. We were fortunate that the roofing element of the work was won, competitively, by Angus Young Roofing Specialists. The 1960’s concrete tiles were replaced with Burlington Best Slates laid in random widths and in diminishing courses. Detailing that was welcomed by the National Park Planning Team. Angus and his team worked lovingly on the roof in all weathers, tackling hidden problems of rotten timber with consummate professional skill. Whilst being proactive in helping us find solutions that were sound and effective, at no time did Angus try to inflate the cost of the additional works but was keen to make sure the finished job was one he could be proud of and confident that it would stand the test of time. We would have no hesitation in recommending Angus to anyone who has a roofing project that requires care and diligence and is looking for a Contractor who cares about the project as if it were his own home.
